GREENVILLE DISTRICT HISTORY

The history of the Greenville District is closely connected to the inception of holiness through the birth of the Church of God in Christ in Texas.  Elder B. J. Crouch, who was the first general Overseer for the State of Texas, was among the first to be appointed as Superintendent of the Greenville District.  Elder A. W. Burleson was appointed as the Assistant Superintendent. Missionary E. M. Wilson was appointed and worked as District Missionary until her health failed and the Lord called her home in the 1950's.  Subsequently Missionary Juanita Bonner was appointed to serve as District Missionary.

Superintendent B. J. Crouch served faithfully for many years until the Lord called him home in the early 60's.  In 1961 Elder A. W. Burleson was appointed Superintendent in 1961 with Elder D. S. Lacy serving as his assistant.  The Lord's anointing was upon the District and it continued to grow.  With approximately 22 churches ranging from Greenville to Pilot Point, Frisco, Denton, Sherman, Sulphur Springs, McKinney, Grapevine, Lewisville, Haltom City and Mosier Valley just to name a few, the District was split into the Denton and Greenville Districts during the mid-sixties.  Elder T. L. Young, later to become both an Auxiliary Bishop and the 1st Administrative Assistant to the Texas Northeast and all legacy jurisdictions, was appointed as Superintendent of the Denton district.  Still the Greenville District continued to grow and Superintendent Burlesdon faithfully served until his demise in 1971.

In the early seventies, Superintendent D. S. Lacy was left to carry on the work and Elder L. C. Crosby was appointed as his assistant.  At Missionary Bonner's passing in 1975, Missionary Mattie Burleson was appointed District Missionary.  With continued increase, the Greenville District was again split.  Elder T. W. Johnson, now Bishop of Texas Northeast Third Jurisdiction, was appointed Superintendent of the Sherman District.  Superintendent D. S. Lacy continued to carry on the great work for a number of years with Missionary Burleson and the Women's Department working right along side.

Through the spiritual wisdom and vision of Bishop J. Neaul Haynes, the District was split again in 1994 to comprise two sister districts: Greenville North District under Superintendent J. E. Ellis with Assistant Superintendent John Harley, and Greenville South District under Superintendent A. Waldon.  Superintendent D. S. Lacy was made District Suoperintendent Emeritus, and District Missionary Burleson became District Missionary Emeritus.  Missionary Clara Clerkley was chosen as District Missionary of the Greenville North District.  Missionary JoAnn Crosby was appointed District Missionary of the Greenville South District.  Under the leadership of Superintendent Aaron Waldon, the seven churches comprising the Greenville South District continued to prosper.  After ten years of faithful service the Lord called Superintendent Waldon home in December of 2003.

In March 2004, Elder M. C. Williams was appointed by Bishop J. N. Haynes to assume the Superintendency of the Greenville South District. The Lord has and continues to bless the pastors of this district with a hunger and thirst for souls; for bringing backsliders to repentance; and for praying for the healing and deliverance of the sin sick. As Always, TO GOD BE THE GLORY.
